FUN FACTS:
The name "zebra" comes from the Old Portuguese word zevra which means "wild ass". There are 3
extant species: Plains Zebras, Mountain Zebras, and Grevy's Zebras. The Plains Zebra is the most
common and there are many subspecies. In the wild they do not interbreed with one another..
However, some captive interbreeding has been accomplished.
According to a Bushmen folk tale of Namibia, Africa the zebra was once all white but got its black
stripes after a fight with a baboon over a waterhole. After kicking the baboon so hard the zebra lost his
balance and tripped over a fire and the fire sticks left scorches mark all over this white coat.

If you are wanting that "exotic horse" then the Zebra is for you. Our Zebras are kept in a
large pasture with our Black Buck Antelope, Emus, and Rheas.
(1)(2)  Our oldest mare
will come up to us and eat out of our hands when we’re out feeding  in the jeep; even
though she eats out of our hands she will not allow us to pet her.
(3) The other Zebras,
keeping their distance, watch and wait patiently for us to leave so they can join the mare
for the feed we leave behind for them.
When our zebras are sold as pets, we pull them from their mothers as soon after birth
as possible, halter them, give them colostrum for their first feeding ; Foalac milk replacer
is  used for subsequent feedings. Once the baby has been gentled and is accustomed to
nursing the bottle they are ready to be placed in their new home.
The zebras not sold as pets are left on their mothers until they are old enough to be
weaned and pulled and sold as breeding stock.
