The Small Spotted Genet has a body length of approximately 20 inches with a tail of equal length. The long and lean body, sit on short legs, is yellowish
in color with small spots on its body set in a striped pattern; there is a white tip on the end of it’s long striped tail. When alarmed they are known to erect the
hair along their back.
We house our Genets in an outside cabana that is divided so that the male and female can be separated when the babies are born. (1) The cabana is
designed with tree limbs and ledges for them to climb or sit on, and a self-feeder filed with the Mazuri Feline dry food available for them at all times. As an
added treat we also feed the turkey & giblets canned cat food once a day.(2)
Each section of the cabana has it own box equipped with a thermostatic controlled pig warmer covered with 3” of sand for them to have a warm place
to sleep and the female to have her own private box when she gives birth to the babies. (3)
The babies are normally born in the Spring and Fall, after a gestation period of 56 to 76 days, but have been known to arrive anytime of the year. The
number born may range from 1 to 5 per litter. The babies are pulled at 10 days of age, before their eyes are opened, and placed on a kitten milk replacer.
After a couple of weeks, when they’ve adapted to nursing the bottle, they are ready to go to their new home. At around 8 weeks of age the babies will begin
to eat solid food and once they are eating good they can be weaned, but like most of our babies, love the bottle and will take it as long as you “want” to give
it to them.
Genets kittens, when acquired early and given a lot of attention will form a strong bond with you. They tend to bond to one person becoming very
attached and loving and want to be near that person at all times. They can be held and petted but for the most part do not like to be restrained. They are
beautiful exotic creatures that are very curious, playful and are easy to care for and can be litter trained.
Diet: Mazurri Feline diet as well as canned cat food.
Medications: Vaccinations are not required however worming is recommended ever six months using Strongid-T for cats. Dosage: 1cc per 5 lbs. body
weight.
Fleas: If your babies become infested with fleas, you can bathe them using Dawn detergent, in place of a shampoo, as this will kill the fleas as well as their
eggs. In case you need to use a spray, don’t spray directly on the babies, spray the flea spray on a paper towel and wrap the towel around the little one for a
short time. When they are older, Revolution may be applied monthly using the recommended amounts determined by weight for cats.
We have our animals periodically checked by our Vet to assure that the animals sold are healthy at the time of delivery.
